What are the Different Types of Air Handlers?
An air handler is an element that circulates the air within your heating and cooling system. Air handlers are large boxes, usually constructed of metal, which connect to a ductwork ventilation system to distribute the air throughout your building.
There are three types of air handlers:
Terminal units are small indoor systems that distribute outdoor and recirculated indoor air.
Makeup air units are larger indoor systems that only condition uncirculated outdoor air.
Packaged or rooftop units are designed only for outdoor use.
No matter which air handler unit you use, it plays a significant role in your HVAC system.
Why Isn’t Your Air Handler Working?
There are a few common reasons that can affect the operation of your air handler.
One significant component that can cause issues is the air filter. A clogged air filter can cause your AC system to become starved for air. This in turn causes the evaporator coil to freeze, which can eventually shut the unit down.
In some cases, your system will shut off but the inside fan keeps working. This is a sign that the thermostat in your system is broken. A broken thermostat will disable the entire conditioning unit. Another reason for complete failure is an excessive state of vegetation around the outside unit. Loose debris around your property can be sucked into the vents, causing severe damage.
If you find your AC making strange noises, the belt inside the air handler likely has slipped and will need to be repaired. However, if your conditioning system is running but is failing to cool your home properly, there may be greater internal issues at hand. Some causes include a tripped breaker or leaks in your ductwork that are allowing air to push through. In any case, if your heating and cooling system has quit working properly or completely shut down, it is best to contact a professional technician to assist in diagnosing and repairing the problem.
