Reasons to Keep Away From DIY Plumbing Projects

Greenwood Plumber As humans, we like to think that we are always 100% self sufficient and can fix any problem we come across. Even in areas where we have absolutely no business doing that. This usually backfires and ends up costing us more money. The only people that should perform DIY plumbing projects are professional plumbers. Here are three good reasons not to attempt your own DIY plumbing project.

Saving Money in the Long Run

Sometimes we think that we can do it better, but often times we are simply trying to save money and time. For example, I had a broken toilet in my previous apartment. I tried to fix it with two rolls of duct tape and a rag. Obviously this ended up in utter failure. I ended up flooding the bathroom worse and causing water damage to the property. My attempt at plumbing actually cost me far more money than it would if I would have called the maintenance men or even a professional, independent plumber.

Greenwood Plumbing Minding the Warranty

Another reason not to attempt DIY projects is that it could invalidate the warranty of your appliances. Many appliances offer warranties that will repair or replace the appliance for free if something breaks. Those same warranties often times become voided if they learn about your DIY attempt. It doesn’t matter if you were successful or not. The repair person, of a washing machine in this example, will see the awful job you did and instantly realize you tried to fix something. Then they report it to the company. Often times we don’t realize we violate it because most of us skim over warranty details.

Safety

The best reason to avoid a DIY project is for safety reasons. Many people are just following a poor quality video they found on YouTube and make costly mistakes. Most people have no idea what tools to even use, and it can be dangerous if you’re dealing with pipes or the water heater. If you don’t know what you are doing, you can cause an explosion, be scalded with hot water or even electrocuted.

Hire a professional plumber. You will save yourself the hassle of voiding your warranty or spending a fortune repairing damages caused by a repair attempt. Their job may look simple to us, but it is only because they are so good at their job.
