5 Signs Your Air Duct Needs Cleaning or Repair

Jun 5, 2015

Greenwood Air-Quality If you have an air conditioner or HVAC system, then you have air ducts in your home, and periodically they need to be inspected and cleaned. Here are five signs that your air ducts need to be cleaned or repaired:

1. Check for Evidence of Dirt or Dust

First, you need to really take a look at the vents, inspecting both the return and the supply vents.

If there is any dirt, then that shows you may have a much larger issue, and it’s surely time to have them inspected and cleaned by a professional duct cleaning company.

2. Check the Humidity Level

Another important thing to check for is how much humidity there is in your house. This can mean that your duct system has a hole in it somewhere, as that could cause excess humidity levels.

Excess humidity can also cause dangerous mold to form and that can mean big problems for the air quality in your home, as some molds are poisonous to humans.

3. Check the Age of Your Ducts

If the ducts system in your home is several years old, it could be time for a replacement. Ducts will wear out just like anything else that gets used a lot and need to be replaced. Plus, if you live in a home that is more than 50 years old and it has never been checked for asbestos, some older systems can have that and need to be replaced since asbestos is now known to be dangerous.

Another thing that can indicate it’s time to replace or repair your ducts system is if your energy bills have been rising.

If the system has to work harder due to old or clogged or leaky ducts, then you will have high energy bills to pay.

5. Rubbish in the Ducts System

Another possible issue is that somehow debris or rubbish has gotten into your ducts system because of a hole or other problem.

This can cause major issues as it can block the system or tear more holes or make cracks. All of the above will ruin the ducts system and cause it to need to be repaired or replaced.

The bottom line is that your HVAC system uses ducts or a sort of pipeline that the air travels through to cool or heat your home, so these must be carefully inspected and cleaned periodically to keep them running well and keep your energy bills low.
